What is really the best way to keep a live Christmas tree fresh?

I've heard lots of ideas on keeping a real Christmas trees alive. I've heard that putting Mt. Dew instead of water works, keeping it in hot water, or cold water, etc.

    What really works best?

just plain room temp water is the best thing for it! they say that a live tree actually drinks 1 gallon of water the first 24 hours. so, keep it watered & all will be merry!

First cut several small notches in the trunk at the bottom then put the tree in something that covers about three quarters of the exposed trunk, add gravel or loose pebbles and sand, then fill with water, NOT soda or any other liquid. Trees drink water not Mountain Dew. You can add some plant food also, if you can find some that will give the tree all the nutrients it was getting from the soil. Also try a plant food spray before you decorate it. The needles will stay on longer and look better too. Make sure and water it regularly. Keep the area around the tree as cool as possible. The idea is to make its environment as much like outside as possible since that is what it is used to. Good Luck and Happy Holidays!

Drill lots of holes in the base and water it every day but be sure your tree is very fresh when you get it, most are cut up to three months in advance and are pretty dried out by the time they get to the consumer...
