What is the best way to let people know we dont celebrate halloween?

It would be OK to hang a sign. Too bad you have to go to the trouble. All you SHOULD have to do is turn off the light. That is not rude. Not everyone celebrates Halloween. (I do celibrate because I like it, but I still respect those who don't) You don't have to do anythng you don't want to do nor give a reason.

We were taught more manners growing up and not to knock on doors with out lights. It is the rude parents that don't teach kids manners who are the problem. (If I get thumbs down it shows that someone felt I was talking about them.)

Just hang a sign that says "Sorry, No treats" or "Not handing out candy."

Sometimes people just ring the bell anyway to annoy you. Well hope you have a good evening anyway.

Go away for the evening. Plan a family outing to a restaurant or the movies. Personally, though, I can't imagine why someone would not want to spread generosity, good will, and just plain old-fashioned fun by handing out cheap candy and giving children a wonderful memory to look back on when they are adults. Trick-or-Treating is one of my favorite childhood memories. There is no religious significance to the holiday, regardless to what many claim, so religious belief is not a reason to not celebrate it.

My best advice would be to keep doing what you are doing. A sign would probably invite more trouble that its worth, because there are some jerks out on Halloween night. I would maybe keep a small bag of candy though. Some people just aren't going to recognize that lights off means you don't want to be involved, or a little kid might get overly excited and ring your doorbell anyway. If that happens, you can just smile and give them a tiny candy bar. I hope this helps a little bit!
