I think Last House on the Left is the best horror remake out right now. It was a great thrill not to have to sit through 90 mins of sex and drugs.
I think texas chainsaw massacre. But that was good too.
I'd have to say John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) is much better than the original 1951 film "The Thing"
The Fly (1986) by David Cronenberg is also a great movie which I like moreso than the original The Fly from 1958
If we're talking recent remakes I like The Hills Have Eyes remake a lot.
I live for horror and I cringe at the recent remakes that have came out, some horror movies had no business being remade such as 'My Bloody Valentine' which stunk in 81' and stunk earlier this year. And another was 'The Amityville Horror' which made me cringe it was so bad. Now that I got all that out the best remakes IMO are:
1.' The Last House On The Left' .
The original was disturbing and controversial even by todays standards and a remake had to have that same edge so the audience hated Krug and his gang that u wish the worst possible death for them. And the remake succeeded in doing that in an over the top way. ( I still say Krug's kid should have been whacked as well like in the original, watta little heartless creep) the remake was so good it was almost like an original idea.
2. 'Dawn Of The Dead'.
Though the idea of running dead had me a little uncomfortable at first Zack Snyder did a great job remaking a classic. The unrated version is the best as u get to know some of the characters better (and more gore). The story got to the point and u felt the walls closing in on the characters. There was plenty of surprises and a good story which made this a great remake.
3. John Carpenter's 'The Thing'.
Without question one of the best horror movies EVER. Kurt Russell was in top form, the f/x and acting were top notch, but it was the eerie music that put it over the top. I just watched it the other night with my wife (first time she ever seen it) and it blew her away! Funny a horror movie made 27 years ago still pack's a wallop.
4. 'The Hills Have Eyes'. While the sequel was one of the worst movies I have ever seen the remake was a near carbon copy of the original which scared the crap out of me as a kid. While the original was darker and more gruesome in certain ways, the remake was solid and kept u on the edge even with the ending that led to the sequel.
5. 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'. Nothing could top the shock value of the original and the hysteria it created when it was released, but the remake was another solid effort that had lots of gore and a sick a$$ ending where everyone got what was coming to them. I'm not a big fan of horror movies with happy endings but this one rocked.
Other than those 5 most remakes have been garbage, 'Halloween' which was more porn than horror, 'Prom Night' which was ridiculous and a few others. That's my list. Wheeew!
Dawn of the Dead
The Fly
Invasion of the Body Snatchers *Sutherland one*
The Thing
I feel like there's one other I really really liked... XD
