How do you think would be a good way to go around writing a doo wop song?

I wanted to write a doo wop song for my summer project, but don't even know where to begin. Any help appreciated!

First, you need to get a pile of doo wop to listen to! Is there a library nearby that you could borrow things from? I'd also think about listening to related styles: barbershop, gospel and R&B all spring to mind for me. Never be afraid to steal ideas, just remember to change things slightly.

In doo wop, you'll hear a lot of thirds in the backing vocals, so make sure you use that. There was a lot more 12/8 time, as opposed to 4/4, than nowadays, and instrumental parts were fairly plain (to allow the voices to shine). In general the lyrics focussed on love themes, but I don't think you have to feel restricted by that. Best of luck!
