What is the average initial velocity of a bullet?

I need to know the average initial velocity of a bullet from a 'typical' gun. Help please!
I need to know the average initial velocity of a bullet in a typical gun fired vertically. I know the initial velocity cannot be 0 or the bullet wouldn't have been fired.

It depends on the gun and the length of its barrel. The bullet accelerates down the barrel thanks to the gas pressure behind it. Once out of the barrel it there is no more acceleration, just decelerates thanks to air resistance. A revolver with a short barrel might fire a bullet at a few hundred feet per second, Whereas a sniper's rifle can fire a bullet a supersonic speeds (well over 1000 feet per second). A gun firing armour piercing round will fire a bullet even faster than that.
