What would immigrants in the 1800s take with them to another country to work?

Okay. I have a project due in my social studies class about immigrants in the 1800s. We're supposed to write down a list of 5 items that an immigrant in the 1800s would take with them to work in another country other than clothes. Any ideas? I have a journal and family photos. Any answers would be great. Thanks.

I would imagine they would take the tools of the trade they practiced in their homeland.

I.E. A furniture maker may bring his hand planes, saws etc with him.
A cook would bring the tools of that trade.

Metal tools if they had them.. other wise.. a strong back. And they used those strong backs dusk to dawn. Sometimes, however, they brought seed from a particularly good crop. They planted the seed when they got land, and began a very serious process of introducing excellent varities of crops to the United States.

Cured and sewn leather for horses were valuable. The horses of those days could tear a harrness in two with their power, so a really good harness was almost as good as a good metal tool.
