what was the 1st time a president ran with a running mate? rather than giving the runner up for president the duty of vice presidency?

    No really clear answer.

In 1796, both Adams and Jefferson sort of ran at head of a ticket even though VP went to second place finisher (the race was close enough that Jefferson got VP with Adams's running mate finishing further back.

Likewise in 1800, Jefferson and Burr ran as a ticket and thus tied for President -- Jefferson's supporters would say that Burr was the VP candidate.

In 1804, you would have had your first election in which VP was elected separately.

For officially running as a ticket, you might have to go to 1832 with Jackson and Van Buren as the official nominees of the new Democratic Party.
