How should I go about finding out if my former employer is bad-mouthing me to other companies?

They unfairly fired me, but in the end I justified myself in a court-room. I proved that I was not at fault. I want to have a friend call them, pretending to be a potential employer seeking a reference for me. Is this a good idea? What should be asked? What should he not say?

Yes,Have them say that they are calling for a reference for so& so. Then have them ask the dates that you worked there. (That's all they are supose to give out) Then have your friend ask "What's the reason that so&so no longer works there? Did so&so give a 2 weeks notice? That ought to be enough questions to get the info that you need.

Have your friend call and say that he is considering renting an apartment to you. He can just say "I noticed that lion wrote on his application that he was employed with you. Any problems I should be aware of?" If he lies and badmouths you, he's defaming your character and could be threatened with a lawsuit.
