Depends on the size of the submarine!

Rather depends on the submarine, doesn't it?

Some mini-submarines can submerge in a 12 foot swimming pool.

Some SSBNs require a hell of a lot deeper water than that. Can't give you an exact answer, of course...anyone who does is either (1) wrong or (2) REALLY wrong.

Depends on the size of the sub. The more water it displaces by weight, the deeper the water needs to be.

A few things to keep in mind here.

Surface ships can have hulls that go as deep as 150 foot. So anytime a sub is shallower than 150 foot it is in a danger zone. Collisions between surface ships and subs do happen.

    Yes we do have minisubs.

We also have a few 'brown-water' subs. Old boomers that have been converted to suck mud and silt for cooling, so they can nestle down into a river bottom and creep up a river. Those boats also are rigged as troop transports.
