Around the 1700s. If you think about the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette was famous for her extravagant hairdos, dresses and parties. Thats how she earned the title "Madame Deficit"

The French court was most famous for the women's huge wigs during the 1770's. The style was copied by other courts as well. This was a time of lavish and extravagant entertaining.

Huge numbers of aristocrats lived with the court during the year. They needed things to do, so they were treated to anything that was felt to be of interest during the time - sports, hunting, picnics, music, balls and masques. Outdoing each other in fashionable clothing was a way of showing wealth and status.

Other courts in other countries followed the French styles.

The Regency period in England, early nineteenth century, was also a time of extravagant entertainments - huge dances and masquerades given by the wealthy peerage.
