Thread: What is the significance of the rings on a Japanese staff?

This is going to sound nerdy, but I got this question after watching anime. In the anime, there will be a monk or a sage that has a staff. The end of the staff has a giant ring with two or three rings linked inside it.
I was wondering if this is based off of historic fact and if it is what do the rings represent?
