What is series of history books for adults that covers from the ancient times to modern times?

The Story of the World series by Susan Wise Bauer is good for kids, but what about adults? If there is no such series for adults, could you recommend different books that when read together completely covers from ancient times to modern times without overlapping? I think reading 3-6 books would give me a good overall picture of history. Thanks
Recommending more than 6 books would be okay, too. I'm willing to spend from a few months up to a year reading up on history.

I can?t really think of one series per se. With most adult history the focus of the subjects is to narrow to stretch it out over such a vast period (by region, by time period, and by focal point). Otherwise the main subjects only get their surface scratched. If that?s what you want you should attempt to get a hold of a couple college textbooks that would be used for introductory classes such as Western Civilization parts 1 and 2. They do a pretty good job of hitting the high points. A good example would be something like ?Western Civilization? by Jackson J. Spielvogel.
