The goal of both Lincoln and Johnson was to see that the South was once again a part of the USA, that it was fully functioning, although it had to modify its economic style (no more slavery) and had to accept and submit to Washington DC. The Radical Reconstructionists wanted to punish the South, make them suffer and pay for the damage and loss of life during the Civil War, and they wanted to re-make their society, with free blacks in charge, in ways that not even the North would have been comfortable with.
