Thread: How to major in history and minor in a more specific history area?

I want to major in history and then minor in a more specific area, maybe Native American studies, or the Tudors, I still don't know. Anyways, what classes would I take in college? I want to work in a museum or historical site so what would I need to do in college and how long must I be in college? What degree would be best to get- what could I do with those degrees?

An answer to your question depends upon lots of factors. What college are you thinking about? You should check all that interest you and find out what their qualifications are. Most colleges provide information about what kind of courses you would take if XYZ were your major. Check with your school counselor or at the library. You can major in several aspects of history. Some schools offer degrees in Political Science (government), Social Studies, (history in general), etc. You can major in one field, say Political Science, and minor in another, like Native American Studies. It depends upon how much time an effort you want to put into your studies. Will you be able to concentrate on studies and not have to worry about a part-time job to help pay for college? Can you apply for some scholarships?

see if your university has specialization options. rather than major in overall history, and minoring in something, it gives you the opportunity to do what you described. Unfortunately, with specializations, you can't double major, you can't minor, and you most likely won't be able to take other courses not needed for your degree.

Many universities do not offer a major stream until after first year. You may want/need the opportunity to have more general knowledge/feel for university coursework, any way. My suggestion would be (which may turn out to be the only available option): major in history taking as many specific courses in the period/geographical area in which you are most interested and then follow up with specialization in an Honours/Masters/PhD programme.
