Essay on British Imperial Governors - suggestions?

Hi everyone. I am working on my research paper for my course "British Empire: 1815 to present."

The prof gave us a list of suggested topics and the one that sticks out to me is the question: Were colonial governors "little autocrats"?

However I don't know much about the eastern half of the British Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries. He also wants us to focus on one particular colony rather than all over the place.

So I am asking for suggestions on what a good colony would be to talk about despot-like governors. Thanks!

You might want to start by checking out Stephanie Williams' book Running the Show: Governors of the British Empire. I'm reading it now - it's very informative about the day-to-day activities of the governors, what it took to become one, and what sorts of challenges they faced (and how London often didn't feel the need to back them up).
