What is the most common cause of loose bowel and bleeding?

I have a family member that has been suffering from fairly severe bouts of diarrhea over the past week and has seen blood in her bowel. She just informed me that she found blood and bowel in her bed when she awoke this morning. She is going to see the doc asap, but in the interim - does anyone know what could cause this? She had no idea that this occured during the night until she awoke in the morning.

something with the colon and rectum.
could be an infection, or a tumor, possibly cancer.
see a doctor as soon as possible

IT could be as simple as internal hemorrhoids. Or irritable bowel syndrome.

I have experienced this before back when id go to school without taking breakfast. after a few months of doing so, i experienced diarrhea with blood drops in my bowels. i found out later that it was caused by hyper acidity due to my empty stomach and that this is a prelude to ulcer. now i feel ok as i see to it to eat my meals regularly and always take anti-hyper acidity medicines in case it comes up again.
