What is it called when they need to break your jaw to reallign your jaw before braces called?

I want to do some research on it and my dentist office is closed. I have to have my jaw broken and wired shut for it to be put where it is suppose to be before the ortho will put braces on me. What is this called? Or where do I start to look? Anyone else heard or had this same experience?
It is necessary so apparently you are no help!

It is called Orthognathic surgery, and it means correcting your bite and jaw alignment by moving one or both of your jaw bones.

If both your dentist and surgeon agree this is necessary, it probably is.

My brother had the same thing, but when he went for a second opinion they said it wasn't necessary.
It only sometimes works as well.
I recommend that you get a second possibly third opinion.

I recently got my braces on as well and my doctor told me that I will need this surgery as well, I'm assuming you have some problems with your jaw or that's it not aligned properly( like mine). Basically they told me that it would be broken and realigned properly in order to get my teeth totally straight, its also better for your teeth and jaw joint because if you don't get it fixed it can cause larger problems down the line. However I was able to get my braces on first and they told me I can get my surgery done with the braces already on, and that there is a potential that my braces will correct the problem without even needing the surgery. I don't know your the reason they suggested that but you should definitely look up Orthognathic surgeons in your area and maybe see about setting up a consultation because they can explain what needs to be done even better than your dentist or orthodontist can.
