What is more important, a baritone saxophone or a bass clarinet?

I am in 8th grade band and I play the baritone sax. I always feel like i have more of an important role in band. Is this true?

All instruments are equally important. Without one, the rest of the band will not be the same. All instruments play an important role in band. (:

Bari sax just doesn't sound that good to my ear.

@The guy who said bass clarinet was second to bari in jazz: lol wtf? Have you ever heard Jaco's stuff with that bass clarinetist? It sounds amazing.

Bass clarinet sounds better to my ear than bari sax and it's just as suited for jazz as bari is.

But your role isn't really MORE important than anyone else's. That's just your ego. Don't believe it; it's a lie.

You must listen to the following musicians to make a decision :-

    Gerry Mulligan ( bari ).
    Anthony Braxton ( bcl).

Both play different parts in most band literature, so the answer is they're equally important. In jazz band, Bari sax is played about 80-90% more often than bass clarinet.

About Jaco Patorius. Yes he was a prominent bass player in the fusion jazz, but he hardly represents the main stream ideals of jazz. At the same time, he has some really cool stuff.
