Is that where you get all your horse knowledge from, Fennec?
I'm not surprised. I doubt you actually know the answer.
    Disappointing.

As for you, questioner, it's the very start of collection. It's where you want a newly developing horse to start out and/or when you're warming up. What we don't want is for you to be pulling his head in, or else he will drop his back and ride 'hollow'. It's not pleasant to see, obviously forced and nothing good will come of it.

As a newly developing horse, dropping long and low will get him stretching out his neck and really reaching for the bit, his strides longer and more fluid, natural and free.
We want longer strides, not faster strides. We want to maintain a steady gait but at the same time, have him stretching out at every step.

This is all to help him build the muscles in order to 'carry himself' (or collect).
Bear in mind it is not collection and the muscles will not be developed over a period of days/weeks.

It takes a lot of time and work.
