We're from California and are in the middle of planning a trip to Orlando's Magic Kingdom in May. I've seen a lot of online discount tickets available. Are these companies legit? Also, what is the best/cheapest way to purchase tickets in advance.

No, they aren't legit. Disney only guarantees the validity of tickets purchased directly from them or from an authorized dealer like undercovertourist.com. AAA members also get modest discounts.
If they are very cheap, they are probably fake or some sort of scam. Also, don't purchase partially used tickets from someone or an auction like ebay. Disney tickets are non-transferable and are tied to the original owner by fingerprint. Trying to use someone else's ticket will get you turned away at the gate.
http://www.mousesavers.com has some good info on saving money.
The one that I bought my tickets from was undercovertourist.com and they were great. I saved at least $50 for each pass that I bought and taxes are included in their prices as opposed to other sites where it's not.
Be very careful about buying tickets from other than Disney. Esp, "days left" tickets that you find on Auction sites. The first time you use your ticket, they take your finger print so it can only be used by the original holder. I wouldn't take the chance of saving a few bucks by getting them somewhere else. It would be a shame to get there and can't use the tickets.
Have fun..we are going again in May...
Generally, the concept of Discount tickets is misleading. There is a catch (either make a donation, sit in on a timeshare lecture). Simply buy through Disney
