Need to replace the drain and stop mechanism on pedestal sink, How do i remove porcelain to get to plumbing?

I am having trouble seeing where the porcelain is attaced to the floor and wall. I see caulking around the junctions of the sink at both the wall and bathroom floor. But I am wondering if there are any bolts or anything else to that effect holding the sink to the wall and/or floor?

How do I remove the sink without causing damage?

Also I have noticed that when I fill the sink and stop it, some water falls to the floor, which tells me that the former owners failed to put a layer of sealant on top of the fiberglass sink and underneath the perimeter of the drain stop. What kind of putty should be placed there ?

Okay, I don't think I can help you with all of your issues. Our pedestal sink has everything pretty visible behind, it shows where it is screwed into the wall and how the top will come off, BUT that is my pedestal sink...think yours is different.

What I can tell you is that there is a product called "plumbers putty" that they use to seal up joints like the ones you described. Also, "plumbers tape" is used to seal the threaded joints, make sure you use that too.

    Hope this helps a little.

Typically, the bowl is hung to the wall on a bracket. The base is placed under the bowl and really is not holding the bowl but more or less just supporting it a little. You should be able to use a utility knife to cut away the caulk around the base and then work it away and out from the bowl to get to the pipes. Plumbers putty is used under the drain plug on the top sink side It will squish out between the bowl and drain when tightened. Under the sink on the drain should be a thick rubber washer and metal washer that tightens the drain pipe to the sink and drain in the sink. Don't use plumbers putty on this part- it has to be the rubber washer.
    Good luck

usually behind the pedestal itself, there would be something like a screw or soemthing, also just as an FYI if you go to Home Depot you can get a Very nice "New Pedestal" sink of under 50$ sink and stand, so go for it. If this is broken dont sweat it!
