Is it illegal to have your dog ride in the front seat?

I have heard that in some states this is illegal and I just wanted to be sure because I drive with my dog often.

Also, do you recommend using dog seat belts to protect your dog because I worry sometimes about his safety.
I live in New Hampshire. I am not sure if anyone will know this in detail.

That depends on the state that you are in, in most states yes it is. If you are going to bring your dog for a ride then yes you do need to have him in a seat belt. Just like a kid if there was some thing to happen then he cant stop him self. Please get one.

i don't think there are any laws pertaining to where a dog can ride in the car, and yeah, i would recommend a pet seat belt, i knew this chic that had a little dog, she was driving with it in the front seat, she was cut off, had to slam on brakes, dog hit inside of windshield and was killed, sad that it could have been avoided with a simple doggie seat belt

Technically yes, but no cop is going to pull you over if your dog is in the front seat. As long as the dog isnt distracting your driving your okay.

Its not illegal to let your pet ride upfront in most places. As for a seat belt, would you let your human baby ride without being bucked up? If not, why would you let your fur baby ride without one?

Not sure about what the law is where you live.

When your dog is in the car, you should either have him/her seat-belted in or in a crate.

Think about this: your pet is on your lap and there's an accident, your dog would probably be killed getting sandwiched between you and the air-bag. Or if the accident is a roll-over accident, the dog could fly out of the vehicle, or get thrown around inside the vehicle and injure the human passengers as well. None of those are good situations.

For crates, make sure you fasten the crate to the car somehow. Either by a tie-down or by a seatbelt.

For dog seat-belts, I'm only aware of 2 that are tested to human-safety-standards, Ruff Rider and Champion.
