How much hassle is it to keep an aquarium?

Depends, if you buy a kit you save a few bucks, such as:

    Petsmart-

Buy a 55 gallon kit includes tank, heater, filter, conditioner, food, etc for Maybe 149.99 and its on sale for 119.99 with Pet Perks

Buy it separately going to be around $200-300 range.

Buy a 5 gallon kit, going to cost around $60 bucks. 5 gallon is not much, and bigger tanks are easier to clean and able to fit in more fish.

    Buy a 10 gallon tank $11.99
    Heater $14.00
    Filter $15.00
Plus fish and food around maybe $30-40.

Prices do vary though where you live.

It's not expensive. The first few weeks are the hardest because you have to cylcle the tank and constantly monitor the water parameters. If you read about it in advance it will be a lot easier. Once you get past the first two or three weeks and have successfully cycled your tank, you will only need to do partial (20 to 40%) water changes every week or two, depending on the size of your tank.

It's not as hard as it seems when you know what you are doing and there are always people on here that will help you out with any questions as you go along, thats how i got my first tank cycled over six months ago. Good luck!

    Edit:

My current 5gallon tank with fitler, heater and air pump cost me less than 50usd
