Thread: How to make really good sweet tea?

I have tried numerous times and I just can not get the tea taste and sugary taste to balance out. I do what the box says...4-5 tea bags over 4 cups boiling water per quart.....I just can not ever get it sweet enough?! How much tea and how much sugar do you use???

here's how we make it:

bring a pot of water to boil, then turn off burner
add 2 family sized tea bags
let steep for 5 minutes

pour one and 1/3 cup sugar into a gallon sized pitcher/container
pour tea over and stir to melt suger
add cold water to fill containter - and stir again

I use several methods, but this one seems to be my sons favorite as well as mine.
Use the Lipton Cold Brew.
Fill pitcher with cold water
2 large tea bags
1 small tea bag of one of the Celestal Seasonings Vanilla blend.
Let sit for about 2 hours.
Add 3/4 cup of sugar abd about 1/4 cup of brown sugar.

Even if you dont want to go through all that...try subsituting some brown sugar in with the regular sugar.

Put a medium sized sauce pot on to boil. Fill with water and drop in two family sized tea bags. Bring to the boil and when it's boiling rapidly turn off heat. Let the bags steep for at least 20 minutes. Meanwhile, measure 1 1/2 cups sugar (or more if you like it really sweet- up to 2 cups) and pour into a gallon sized pitcher. Pour over brewed tea and stir to dissolve sugar. Fill pitcher to the top with water and serve over ice with lemon wedges.

1) use a dark Indian loose tea in a tea pot, 3 heaped tea spoons, never tea bags.
2) pour on boiling water and leave to infuse for 4 mins.
3) pour into a cup using a strainer that contains milk and 2 spoons of sugar,
4) stir and consume with gratification.

vary the amounts to taste and quantity, I drink it in 1 pint mugs

You need better quality tea. You're trying to get rid of the bitterness, but tea shouldn't be bitter.

Try buying some looseleaf tea, you should have a tea shop in your area that sells it, look in your phone book. Tea bags are made from the worst of the tea, and are finely ground so that it's instant basically, but also bitter. Looseleaf teas are made from better selections, and better grades, steep differently, and aren't bitter. Bagged tea is the lowest grade of tea possible.

So first, buy some looseleaf tea.

Then try again. But also consider using stevia instead of sugar, you'll use a fraction of it, it'll be sweet, and it's 0 calories so it's guilt free. Powdered stevia can be found in health food shops, if it has a bitter aftertaste buy a different brand.

But again, it's likely your tea selection. Buy looseleaf tea, it's superior.

Try making a syrup of 1 cup water and 1 cup white sugar. Boil the water, add the sugar and stir until it's the consistency of syrup. Sweeten to taste. I don't know how much tea to use.
