How hard is it to get a letter published in a national newspaper?

If you write to the editor of a major newspaper like The Wall Street Journal, or USA Today, what are the chances of getting your letter published? Thanks.

If your letter is clear, to the point and pertains to some issue in the news, I'd say your chances are pretty good. You cannot imagine the imbecilic drivel that arrives by the truckload to most letters-to-the-editor departments at newspapers. Really, if your letter makes reaonable sense, it has an excellent chance.

But you won't get paid for it, sad to say.
