Thread: How do I make my 3 year old Pomeranian more sociable?

I recently acquired a 3 year old male pomeranian. He does nothing but hide under the bed. I have to coax him out so that I may walk him. Even at meal time, I have to bribe him out from under the bed.
Once he is out from under the bed, he is fine - playful, energetic, and sociable - as long as he can't make it back to his hiding spot.
What can I do to make him come out from under the bed without having to bribe him and then barricade my room?

Is there a lot of activity in the house kids? other animals? may just take some getting used to does he have a doggy bed that is his own you can try putting it in the corner somewhat hidden or under kitchen table may make him feel safe until he gets familiar with the new home.

Ignore him when he goes under there. He's there for one of two reasons:

1. Because going under there gets your attention, and he likes that, or

2. Because going under there gets you to leave him ALONE, because he wants time to chill.

In his last home, if he was from a house, was he abused? He could remember being hit or yelled at for hiding under the bed therefore he fears coming out. Be sure when he comes out to praise him with a treat to show him that him coming out is good. Say "no" when he goes to hide under the bed and take him somewhere else. It should help his problem.

You're the boss right? doesn't sound like it, You're the Alpha not your dog! remember just cause he's cute and small and fluffy doesn't mean he's not a dog! no bribing, only forcing if you force a dog they know that you won't give up and you're not afraid, you feel for him so he thinks to himself "OK they don't mind me hiding and running away and not walking, because they give me treats when i'm doing that stuff." No more bribing! you get under there with a leash, clip it on and pull him out of that house! another way is every morning (and if you want every night) put a leash on him and let him walk around with it on, then when you decide to go on a walk just say "Fido!(or whatever the dogs name is) and Come!" don't say you're going on a walk, just say come and take him. get him a choke chain incase he trys to pull away.

I agree with Another, he is getting you to perform pretty good.
When you bribe him from under the bed, he thinks you are rewarding him.

You have to get him to come out from under the bed another way. You might even just ignore him completely while he is under the bed. Call to him from out side the room. Greet him and praise him then.
Only give him a treat when he accomplished what you want.
Like after you take him for a walk, that way he will look forward the walk.
Most toy dogs are timid and will find a place where they are more at ease. Yours is under the bed.
Pom's are great dogs he will give you years of love.

he will probably get used to you, however postive reinforcement helps.
treat him when he comes out from under the bed and when he stays out, he'll get the point.

also annas answer was good but i disapprove of a choke chain as they have soft throats and many have a hacking problem for no reason at all...
