How to clean a metal dogs water bowl?

It gets covered in a hard white crusty substance, I think it is called salt. I have scrubbed but cant get it off.
I live on a Greek island, there are no cleaners for dogs bowls in the supermarket here. Rinsing and air drying will not help.
I will try the lemon, thanks!

If it is made from stainless steel you can buy a cleaner at the supermarket.

I mix white vinegar and hot water, about 50-50, and let it soak for a while. Then make sure you wash the bowls frequently to avoid the build-up and also keep bacteria and germs from growing in them. (I just throw the dog bowls in the dishwasher every night.)

Had a similar problem with a small bowl I used for puppies, but which I then used to stand my indoor plants in. I wanted to use it for a new puppy. What you are seeing is limescale. I used Cilit Bang on it, and it literally disappeared (not the bowl!!). However you may not be able to get hold of this - try vinegar? So many cleaners are vinegar based but I'm not sure if this is appropriate for lime?

You need something acidic to get rid of limescale - water in Greece does seem to be very hard - you don't get soap suds when you put washing up liquid or powder in the water. Lemon & vinegar are good suggestions but don't use too strong a mixture as stainless steel won't stain but it will get pitted over time.
If you can find a lime descaler for kettles, that might do the trick
Wish I was on a Greek island right now!

You can use the same liquid cleaner that you use to remove lime scale in your toilet. Obviously, you will then have to wash and rinse the dog bowl thoroughly before using it.

As some of the other answerers have said, almost any acidic solution will do the job but the toilet cleaner is cheap and quick and you probably already have it in the house.
