How can I keep my cat from going upstairs?

I'm having renovations done upstairs, there is alot of dust, nails, and basically he could get hurt walking around there.

I feel really bad about not letting him up there, it's his favourite spot, but I don't want my cat to get hurt.

Are there any sprays that I can get at the pet store to make him unattracted to the upstairs hallway?

We have a baby gate up and surprisingly our cats won't jump over it. We put it up at night on like the middle stair so that it would be too hard for them to get a running start or land.

    Cute kitty!

this may sound a little harsh but i have heard that you can get a collar that when the animal go's through a certian barrier it gets a small squirt of water or a small electric shock just to scare it a small ammount so it learns that it isnt alloud to go there but i may be wrong i guess you would need to set up a boundry for this to work but try having a look

there is a product (a foul smelling gel or spray)that will prevent unwanted guests in your garden for use against dogs and cats i guess you could use the same thing for indoors. try 'pets at home' (uk shop) if you are in the US sorry i dont know if you have the same store.
i have tried the product in my garden and does work.

There is not much you can do , unless you keep them in an isolated room temporarily.

    just plain old water.
whenever he starts going up the stairs spray him.
i did this to my cat when he started jumping on the kitchen surfaces and he doesnt do it at all now!
