The Harm of Illegal Drugs
I plan to prove illegal drugs such as marijuana, heroine, and cocaine can be taken in different ways and are harmful.
The first drug to be discussed is marijuana, also spelled marihuna. Marijuana is derived from a plant called hemp. It is made from dried leaves and flowering tops. At first marijuana was used as a medicine. It contains more than 400 chemicals. Marijuana is usually smoked in cigarettes, or pipes. “Most people who smoke marijuana are in the age of 12 and 18 years of age.”(vol 13 201). Some short term effects of marijuana are both known as psychological effects and physical effects. The feeling known as psychological reaction consists of redeye’s and rapid heat beat. Once people start smoking they have a hard time quitting. (false- Ms. Jost) Once people smoke it, carcinogens in it enter the lungs and spread to other organs in the body which may cause cancer or other lung diseases. “The western states have the highest percentage of users at 77%… The north eastern states are not close behind, there running at 22%. As of October, 1974, 29 million people have tried marijuana. Out of the 29 million, 12 million of them use it regurlary.”(Carr 56). At high school level one-half of all students have tried marijuana.
The next drug, heroine, is a narcotic drug derived in 1898 in Germany as a pain reliever. It was discovered during the search for a non-addictive morphine substitute. It was not carefully tested. Heroine is a bitter, odorless, white crystalline power. It can be injected into the veins which brings the biggest reaction. “Once injected, it may cause unconsciousness or maybe even death.”(Zaclcon 65). It does cause hallucinations and other distortions, but could put people in a sleepy mood..
“Physiological effects are feelings of euroria,
warmth, or even slurred speech.”2 (Zaclcon 66).
Because heroine has an addictive nature, the manufacture, import, and use is banned in the United States. “Every day it is smuggled from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and South East Asia.”(vol 8 159). If it is used all the time it could lead to addiction which acts on the nervous system. Heroine is as addicitive as cigerattes.
Finally, cocaine the strongest stimulant of natural origin, is found in the Adean Highlands. Cocaine is made from the coca plant. Most cocaine is grown in Central and South America. At first cocaine was used as a local anesthetic during surgical procedures involving the ear, nose, and mouth. “However, cocaine is sold in form of white crystalline powder containing usually 5 to 10% pure cocaine.”(Carr 19). Cocaine can be taken by oral ingestion, or nasal sniffing (often called snorting). It works by blocking the returns of norepinephrin and dopamine by their cells of origin. Cocaine is rapidly metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine. Once you have injected this in your body, it starts to increase your pulse rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. Babies who are born to mothers who are heavy cocaine users also experience some of these symptoms.
As a result, the effects of these drugs may cause death or other symptoms.
