    How is the thickness in the foil monitored during the manufacture process of aluminum foil?

    Aluminum foil is made by pulling aluminum through a series of rollers, with the distance between the rollers decreases as it goes through them.

    One method commonly employed is to use a source of alpha radiation and a Geiger counter style device. The ease with which alpha particles can pass through aluminium is very dependent on the thickness of the aluminium. A control system is then set up where the distance between the rollers is altered so as to keep the radiation counter value constant.

    This technique is probably more associated with Physics, but it's pretty interesting!

    Another technique for confirming proper thickness, is have the foil pass over a scale.
