I really want a canon, but ive heard good things about nikons. So, which do you reccomend?
both are market leaders, since i use canon so would recommend canon it is a better camera but its lenses are quite expensive
Canon is really the company leading the world in digital technology at the moment. Nikon makes great equipment to be sure but Canon just has a little edge.
I own and recommend the Rebel XS (1000D), an SLR for several reasons. The build is superb and so are the photos. It's easy to learn and operate.
Look here to see some of my Canon shots.

Short answer: They're both good brands, and both very popular. It all depends on personal preference.
35 days of the newest thing.
As soon as one guy comes out with something new the other guy does the same thing, just a little better. Then the first guy does it back. And this has been going on for 50 years.
All the meanwhile the other 12 respected brands have been doing actually new things. Sony invented digital, Polaroid went for instant print, Olympus made liveview SLR...
There is no difference what so ever between Canon and Nikon. If you can name one, wait a week.
They are just two companies who make great cameras. Canon has slightly more market share, and is capable of manufacturing cameras from start to finish. Nikon relies on third party manufacturers for some components. Interestingly Sony is the world largest manufacturer of DSLR sensors.

For those that think that sensor in Nikon and Sony are the same.

Nikon also don't make their lens obsolete, their DX lens (made for smaller sensor) will work on their full frame cameras bodies in fact lens made in the 70's will still work on their cameras, the same can't be said about Canon.
