How can you recieve a fax without it going to your voicemail?

How do you need to hook up the phone line. I have one jack and a splitter with dsl coming out of it. Also I have a fax machine and a satellite receiver and a telephone. I also have them ran thru a surge protecter. Any suggestions?

It isn't really practical to have a fax and voicemail on the same line. Fax machines and voicemail systems are both programmed to pick up after a certain number of rings. If your fax machine is set up to pick up after 5 rings, and your voicemail picks up after 4 rings, no faxes will ever get to your fax. On the other hand, if you adjust your fax machine to pick up after 3 rings, no voice calls will ever get to your voicemail because the fax will pick up first. You should probably consider getting a separate line for your fax machine.
