Why does my Microsoft Internet explorer automatically connect to a spam site?

I have an ADSL Broadband connection. I don't click on the browser or touch it in anyway. It just automatically opens to these annoying spam sites. Sometimes when I am on other sites, the spam sites take over. I have set the options>privacy to block the sites, but somehow they override. I have also exercised the options of clearing the cookies and blocking the pop-ups.

How do I kill them once and for all?

They are hijacking IE and changing the homepage setting to their own. Try switching to Firefox.
