Thread: What parts will I need to put a notebook hard drive into a desktop?

My old laptop had a hardware problem. The hard drive is still good as far as I know and I would like to put it into my desktop PC. Can someone tell me what type of cable & possibly hard drive enclosure I will need to make this happen?

depends on the HD type. If both computers are old then there should be no problem.

You can just buy yourself a 2.5 inch enclosure, this should do the trick you can use it as a external HDD if you like and connect the enclosure through a usb port. Laptop HDDs are 2.5 inch in size.

thats pretty tough try finding some floppy drive cords with the same sockets as the notebook hd

it should read it as a harddrive but you need to set your bios in order to make it read the new hard drive

Here's a page with a list of hard-drive enclosures. The enclosures can be used to simply install the hard-drive in and then read the data off of it. You can then move the data to your destop.
