What determines the amount of expandable memory a device can read?

I was looking at the specs on a new phone, and it said it memory was expandable up to 32gb. I was wondering, when 64gb micro sd cards inevitably are released, will the phone be able to read them? Is this a matter of hardware of software?

No, it plainly states 32 gigs is its limit. Its hardware design

I means you won't be able to use anything over 32gb.

Hardware or Software - I depends on your computer.

It's a matter of hardware, the number of discrete addresses a device can address. Most devices are made to last 1 or 2 or 3 years, so if the manufacturers don't think 64gb cards will be out in that time they won't spend the extra 2 cents to enable their devices to read them. (But also, of course, if something hasn't been invented yet, how do you know how to interface with it?)

Right now no... But there is always the possibility of a firmware update that will allow it to take advantage of larger memory.
