What is the best or recommended video player to use for my computer?

I hate Windows Media Player. I got bored of it. I want one that could pretty much play every video format.

Firstly, get rid of every multimedia players(other than WMP) on your comp.
Then, get hold of KMPlayer and a K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (just Google it).
First install KMPlayer & then the codec pack(specify all video formats for KMPlayer & audio formats for WMP or KMPlayer if you want).
Read everything while installation and specify all the settings correctly.
You're now cool to run off any video/audio format you come across.

VLC is the best player to use..VLC Media player is capable to play most videos you watch on the web, as well as DVDs and music files. VLC Media Player is a free program and available for download on the web.

And this supports MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 / DivX files from a hard disk, a CD-ROM drive, and so on.
