What happens to copper when heated to ghostly red and dipped in motor oil?

Reason I need to know is im working with copper, making jewelry. I have been annealing it by heating it to a ghostly red, and plunging it in water. The annealing softens the copper so i am able to work it easier. I got curious and just wanted to know, thought that it might give it some cool coloring or I don't know what. Just wanted to know, and could not find anything on it on the internet.
