What does nitric acid do when added in a solution of silver chloride to prevent it from forming a colloid?

It is part of a lab question and would like to know the explanation. How does it prevent colloid formation?

The nitrate salt of silver is highly soluble, and less likely to flocculate / precipitate. The same effect could be done using sodium nitrate; but which is used depends on the aim of the experiment.
