    What is being oxidized in the manganese dioxide and hydrochloric acid reaction?

    Mn goes from +4 to +2 ( reduction)
    Cl goes from -1 to 0 ( oxidation)

    What is being oxidized in the manganese dioxide and hydrochloric acid reaction?

    I am so confused and I'm not sure if I worked out the oxidation states correctly; I got -1 for H in 4HCl
    The equation is
    MnO2(g) + 4HCl(aq) ----> MnCl2(aq) + 2H2O(l) + Cl2(g)
    Doesn't Cl go from -4 to 0 since its 4 HCl?
