How to dress a device to keep it from freezing?

What's the best insolation to wrap with so that it protects enough so no malfunction occurs after being kept outside through freezing winters?

Could I cover with felt pads, and a zip lock bag, in a wooden box? Or would a plastic container be better? I could make both the wood or plastic boxes airtight, I just don't know which is better to go with. Any other advise or different materials to use altogether?
Block styrofoam or felt? Which is better? Or if I use both once one should go first?

The best would probably be a vacuum flask if it would fit in followed by Aerogel if you has a lot of money to spend. Other easy to access options include insulation foam and expanded polystyrene.
The wiki page below has a list of materials and their R values so you can make an informed decision on insulation.

Also remember you nee to make the housing water tight or freeze thaw cycles could defeat the whole process.

For the container itself plastic would be better than wood in the long run and would also be easier to seal..
