What makes interesting fictional characters in a book?

Just thinking of ways to make characters interesting. Any ideas that I could work from would be wonderful.

a person who has had a troubled past, but always is caring and kind and tries to help. As time went on, more people rejected them, seeing as they were an outcast. The character then turns bitter, and tries to get revenge on everyone that had torminted him just because of the way his life occured. But, then in the end, he realizes that him getting revenge on all these people is no better than what they did to him, and that the only way to get rid of his bitterness is to forgive.

Characters are interesting depending on the characteristics you give them. For example, we'll look at Harry Potter. First, there are physical characteristics. He has a unique lightning bolt scar, messy jet black hair and eyes everyone instantly sees are his mothers. Second he has talents, we'll call them. He's a wizard, he speaks Parsletongue, he can fly well on a broom and play quidditch. Third he has emotional characteristics. He is a loyal friend, a "Gryffindor", a fighter, etc. For other examples of this there's more Harry Potter characters, like Hermione's brains and Ron's wit.
You don't have to give your characters something weird and crazy just to make them intriguing, a nice combination of things will set your characters aside.

    Good luck!
