Thread: What is a good camera for a beginner photographer?

I have been meaning to get a new camera for a while and since it's summer I am much more inclined to do so. I don't really know anything about photography as I am just now taking an interest in it so I need a lot of help here. I want something with a decent zoom that takes good action shots. I don't want to spend more than about $200 give or take. Please specify what you like/dislike about a certain camera. Thanks!

I'll approach from a different angle.

The great landscape photographer Ansell Adams once said it's not the camera but the 12 inches behind it.

I've seen great photos taken with iPods, disposables, second hand cameras worth a few dollars and plenty of terrible photos taken with top of the range cameras.

In fact if you have a local specialist camera store try seeing if they have some good second hand cameras you can get real bargains often. Don't forget to try before you buy and make sure they come with cables and manuals.

I'd get something with manual controls like for exampe a "bridge" camera such as the Nikon L110 12MP Digital Bridge Camera. It's pretty cheap and gives you enough control to allow you get more creative.

If it's not in your budget then there are cheaper cameras with similar capabilities from Sony and Canon Powershot series
