Thread: What city in the world today would be equivalent to Athens of the ancient Greeks?

In other words, what is the cultural capital of the planet today? The place where the world's leading scholars and artists come to work.

The contenders would have to be Paris and New York. I'd have to give the edge to New York because of the number of scholars and the scale of the cultural scene.

New York or London. but only in the sense of cultural capitals. The political systems are completely different.
