What is average learning curve for a guitar?

Just got one - any tips about a decent amount of time to become somewhat competent? Is under a year for basic songs / composing enough? (I know it can take a long time to completely master LOL).

Learning how to play a guitar well is going to take years.
But you can learn a lot in one year if you are properly motivated and trained.

Learn from a qualified instructor and you will accomplish more and develop greater self-discipline. You will be taught how to avoid the mistakes that could sabotage your efforts.
You will be shown the best ways of becoming technically proficient and be trained to perform a variety of musical pieces.

Try doing the 24 variations. If you practice that exercise everyday learning how to play scales will be a sinch

also try prasticeing the blues scale hear i'll tab it for ya

    1{----------------------------------1-4----
    2{----------------------------1-4-----------
    3{--------------------1-3-4------------------
    4{---------------1-3------------------------------
    5{-------1-2-3--------------------------------------
    6{-1-4--------------------------------------------------

play that backwards and forwords it's a very useful scale i used it all the time.

Man, if you want to learn how to play guitar, congrats!

You can listen to all the people that will tell you to find an instructor, and pay for people to teach you things, but if you are a halfway intelligent person (which I assume you are) and aren't interested in being the next John Petrucci, give yourself about 6mos. to 1 1/2 years to become somewhat decent enough to compose basic rock/pop songs.

If lessons seem like they could be fun for you, then go for it.

But otherwise, it is far more rewarding to teach yourself, with some guidance from a friend.

Besides, how rock 'n' roll is it to take lessons????
